Fremont, California, September 20, 2023 — Optoplex today announced that it has successfully developed a phase-tunable 90deg optical hybrid for demanding coherent detections. The product is based on Optoplex’s proprietary technology of athermal free-space optics design of miniature interferometer which features unparallel performances, such as low insertion loss, polarization-insensitive, precisely skew-matched, balanced outputs, and excellent environmental stability.

90deg optical hybrid (aka QPSK mixer), polarization-diversified 90deg optical hybrids (aka 2x8 DP-QPSK coherent mixer) and their integration with balanced receivers (integrated coherent receivers) are widely used in high-speed optical communications networks, lidar, distributed fiber optic sensing (such as DAS), biomedical OCT (optical coherent topography), quantum communications (such as DV-QKD and CV-QKD) and quantum computing.

Optoplex was the first to introduce the 90deg optical hybrid and integrated coherent receivers in 2008 and since has been the market leader in high-speed optical communications.

Recently, due to the rapid advancement in AI and quantum communications, 90deg optical hybrid and integrated coherent receivers have become demanding and critical components in doppler lidar and QKD quantum communications.

Normally 90deg optical hybrid offers an I/Q phase difference (90deg) with a tolerance of +/-10deg (standard) and +/-5deg (premium). With the phase-tunable feature, users are able to I/Q phase 90deg difference very precisely. This is very important in building high-performance QKD quantum systems.
